Rycote Miniscreen Windshield System - Product Overview

MINISCREEN™ WINDSHIELDMINISCREEN™ WINDSHIELD

A unique feature of the Rycote Miniscreen™ Windshield provides two levels of wind attenuation protection for your microphone with uncompromising audio transparency The Miniscreens' low profile design will fit comfortably and not obstruct your shot and cast shadows in your wide-shots when on a camera. The Miniscreen is also ideal for microphone on boom pole applications.

Miniscreen™ Windshield on CameraA Miniscreen™ Windshield is constructed of acoustic, open-cell foam within a rigid, screened outer shell. It has been engineered to provide excellent audio transparency while being tough enough for relentless use in harsh outdoor environments. Rycote's Miniscreen internal foam is specially designed to last and not be affected by inescapable damaging UV rays. Many foam based windscreen products use cheap foam that will break down and disintegrate within a short time of use in the field.

Miniscreen WindjammerThe outer screening material is vital for the Miniscreens ability to attenuate wind noise while having minimal effect on the microphone's response. Rycote Miniscreens have a unique rubber end cap where the microphone is inserted that creates a non-slip seal and prevents wind swirls at the rear of the microphone from getting in. Miniscreens generally provide up to 22 dB of wind noise attenuation on axis at 0 without a Miniscreen Windjammer affixed. The Miniscreen Windjammer (sold separately) is a black synthetic fur cover that is pulled over with the Miniscreen, thus providing a second level of wind protection. The Windjammer is crucial for higher wind conditions and has a negligible affect on audio transparency. It can then provide up to 30 dB of wind-noise protection, which is as good as many full blimp systems on the market.

Miniscreen Windshields Feature:

  • Black fabric / mesh, slip-on windshield for protection against wind-noise.
  • Can be used with or without Windjammer fur cover for all wind conditions.
  • Suitable for cylindrical microphones 19-25mm (0.75-1.00”) in diameter.
  • 55 mm (2.16”) diameter shell, Approx. Weight: 51g (1.8 oz).

Miniscreen Windjammers Feature:

  • A black synthetic fur, for use in conjunction with the Miniscreen.
  • For use in stronger wind conditions, the Windjammer fitted onto the Miniscreen will give up to 30 dB of wind-noise protection overall.
  • Manufactured from short black 10 mm fur to avoid casting any unnecessary shadows when working in camera mounted wide-angle situations.
  • Elasticized at one end for easy fitting over the Miniscreen.

Miniscreens are available in four lengths; 10cm, 12cm, 14cm and 18cm for camera mounted microphone and boom pole applications

How to quickly choose the right Rycote Miniscreen Windshield for your microphone:

  1. Make sure your microphone has a cylindrical diameter between 19mm and 25mm. For best results, the area of the microphone the Miniscreen covers must have a consistent cylindrical diameter without any taper or extrusions.

slot length and diameter

  1. Pick the length based on the “slots” of the microphone where sound is picked up - 10cm, 12cm, 14cm and 18cm lengths available. All the sound slots must be covered for proper results. Any integral microphone switches (low cut or pad) should also be covered with gaffers tape to seal-off potential wind incursion.

Example: an Azden SG(M)-1X uses an 18cm length Miniscreen to cover all the slots

  1. Do I need a Miniscreen Windjammer? The unique feature of the Rycote Miniscreen Windshield is that it provides two levels of wind attenuation protection. A Miniscreen can certainly be used alone with good results for a degree of wind strength. The Miniscreen with Windjammer combination will maximize the amount of wind that will be suppressed which is better than other foam and fur covered push-on windscreens. Miniscreens with or without fur cover is great for camera mics mounted close to the lens whereas you want to prevent shadows cast in your shot.
