Repair Information and Procedures

 

We require a valid RA (Return Authorization) be issued for all items being sent to us for repair evaluation or warranty claim. If you have an item from one of our brands that requires attention, please phone or email us with details of the product and problem. We will issue an RA for an approved item in the form of a PDF document sent to you via email or fax. Please print the document, fill out completely and include with your shipment to us. Please write your RA number on the address line of the shipping label like the following example:

Your shipment must be sent to us freight prepaid and we advise you to insure the package for full value. Return shipping back to you is an additional charge to the repair in all instances with the exception of approved Warranty repairs (UPS Ground only at no-charge for warranties). This includes items that are not repairable and/or total damage.

 

Redding Audio, LLC. requires a valid major credit card* in advance to process a non-warranty repair - no exceptions. Your repair bill and return shipping to you will be billed to this credit card. We do not accept Purchase Orders, checks or third party payments (e.g. Production company you were working for when mic got damaged) for repairs. Your repair will not be facilitated until we have the required information. No charges will be made to your credit card until the completion of service. You will be notified when your repair is complete and being despatched to you.

Schoeps Microphone Repairs

 

Schoeps microphones must be sent to the factory in Germany for repair. We at Redding Audio have a system in place to facilitate the whole process for you. If you wish to send your Schoeps to the factory directly, you have that option and must contact Schoeps for further direction. You must advise them you have elected to send your items directly or they will send you back to us. Please read on to fully understand all the particulars of having your Schoeps Microphone repaired before you request a Return Authorization form.

With Redding Audio, you have two options for Schoeps factory service:

  • We send your Schoeps in a batch with multiple items from several different customers. This is the most common and economical method. We send a batch typically every four weeks. Sometimes the schedule is delayed because we need a minimum amount of items to keep costs in line. Freight, international business related costs and supplementary fees are minimized because they are divided amongst several items. Repair lead times can have a broad range of minimally 4, and potentially up to 8 weeks from the day we ship to them. This is the default method unless agreed otherwise.

  • We send only your Schoeps in a shipment exclusively. This is a less common and more expensive method of having your microphone repaired, however can be quite expeditious. You will be responsible for all charges related to the shipment. Please contact us prior to specifically discuss this option.

Special note about 3-Pattern Capsule repairs - includes MK6, MK26 and CMTS301/501

Please be aware that for all Schoeps 3-Pattern capsules - there is NO ESTIMATE option. If you choose to send a switchable 3-pattern capsule (e.g. MK6, MK26) or microphone with attached capsule of this type, please note it is bound by special circumstances. All of these capsules are considered "repair-attempts". Upon inspection, If Schoeps finds they are able to repair it successfully; they will proceed without the option of an estimate or choice to decline the repair and its charges. The basic cost for a successful repair can be broad and possibly cost up to 20% of the original retail price/value of the unit - not including the international freight and fees. In some cases upon inspection and opening the capsule, Schoeps will find the capsule/microphone is not repairable. At this point the unit may not even be able to be restored to the pre-repair condition and will be returned as parts. If this occurs Schoeps does not bill for this but you will still be responsible for the international freight and fees we incur. Please Read before sending

Special note for Schoeps Colette Modular Series (CMC body & MK capsule) repairs

Please be aware that a Colette Series microphone will be repaired and billed as two separate items. For example: your CMC 64 Cardioid microphone will be considered two repair items; a CMC 6U amplifier body and a MK 4 Cardioid capsule. Every component of the Colette Modular System must perform independently to work within the vast array of potential arrangements.

 

 

Estimates for Schoeps repairs

You can request an Estimate* for your Schoeps repair items. There is a box you must check on the RA form. Estimates are not generated by Redding Audio, but by Schoeps after they have performed a complete diagnostic procedure at the factory. Please note that estimates unfortunately delay the completion of a repair batch. Estimates cannot be offered for vintage microphone repairs. Generally “vintage” in this case refers to microphones that preceded the Colette/CMC series. You will be notified if your model microphone is classified as vintage and you will subsequently need to agree to specials terms.

A Note From Schoeps: If you would like to know in advance what the repair of your SCHOEPS microphone would cost, you can request an estimate. Even if only an estimate is being sought, we must have the equipment before us. We cannot offer advice about repair costs by telephone or email, since we never know what will await us inside the actual item. Estimates take extra time and will delay the return of your microphone. They should be avoided if you are under severe time pressure. As a rule there is no charge for an estimate when the repair is carried out. A bench fee is charged only if a repair is declined which would have cost less than 30% of the current list price of the item. If a repair would not make economic sense or would be technically infeasible, there will be no estimate charge.

To arrive at an estimate, the item must be opened and/or disassembled. If the repair is then declined, it is possible that for a microphone that had been partly functional before, it may no longer be possible to restore that same level of functioning without the repair. In isolated instances the existing parts can no longer even be reassembled, and can only be returned to the customer as separate parts with no possibility of replacement for that capsule or amplifier. If examination reveals that the item has no defect and can be restored to full usefulness simply by cleaning it, then to avoid wasting time, we will carry out the cleaning and testing without stopping to offer an estimate.

We ask that you consider the above information if you would like to send any microphones to us for a repair estimate.


Disclaimer

*A $95.00 minimum charge will apply to declined Schoeps Estimates, per item. This minimum charge also applies to items that are found to be not repairable or have no defect by a Schoeps Factory Technician. This fee is inclusive of the international freight charges and Schoeps bench charges we incur by sending your microphone(s) to Germany. If Schoeps does not charge us on a non-warranty item for any particular reason, you will only be charged your portion of freight, international business related costs and/or supplementary fees.

Neither Schoeps nor Redding Audio accepts vintage microphone power supplies and/or their cabling for assessment or repair.

For lavalier and headset microphones most problems occur in the cable near the output connector plugged into the bodypack transmitter. Excessive force on the cable (usually from seated talent) can compromise the tiny leads inside the outer casing and cause noise and intermittent dropouts. Sometimes there is a chance of saving the microphone by cutting off the bad cable section and installing a fresh connector. Lavalier and headworn microphones that fail in, at or near the capsule section cannot be repaired.
